There is a sureness in the compositions of her paintings. Yet, within that structure, [Deborah Ponder] revels in the spontaneity of her medium, exploring the ever-shifting balance between chance and certainty, serendipity and skill.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Deborah Ponder was formally trained in fine art and design, including graduate studies in painting and art history in Florence, Italy. Along with her work as a painter, she has been an award-winning graphic designer and taught principles of visual communication at the college level.
Deborah works in watercolor and oil, with watercolor dominating her portfolio. She is a Signature Member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and the North East Watercolor Society and holds associate memberships in the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society.
The artist approaches her paintings as a form of storytelling, describing them as 'narrative vignettes set in places and moments touched by the people who inhabit them.' Her paintings are known for bold composition, saturated pigment, and dramatic light.
Work by Deborah Ponder is in private collections across the country and can be seen in international, national, regional and local exhibitions.
Deborah Ponder examines the interaction of human presence with the physical environment without including figures in her work. The focus is, as the artist explains, on "small glimpses into the stories of others’ lives" through the "unique, personal marks that people leave on the world."
